For the last twenty years Kazakhstan and Bulgaria have been passing through fundamental political and social-economic transformations. After the end of the bipolar world and the demolition of the soviet system both Bulgarian and Kazakh societies encountered various challenges, which put to the test such important state indicators as identity, traditions and integrity. It was believed that both countries would turn into arenas of interethnic and religious conflicts but both proved that they could be a place for peaceful living together of people of different confessions and ethnic groups.

A STATE OF CONTRASTS
By John Ordway

Page 32

Kazakhstan is a state of sharp, even extreme contrasts. It is a vast state, with the size of Western Europe but with population of just 15 million. A state of impressive mountain peaks, rapid rivers, large waterfalls, glaciers and alpine pastures. A state of endless steppe with hills and green pastures. A dry, arid state, where the ground is cracked and no plants grow. A state of bitter Siberian cold, where temperatures are regularly around -40 Co. A state with scorching summer heat and temperatures reaching +40 Co. This is a country blessed (though according to some cursed) with abundant reserves of petroleum and gas, as well as of literary all types of mineral resources - from gold and platinum to ores and uranium. Kazakhstan is a major producer and exporter of wheat. It is situated on the Silk way, the cross point of Europe, Asia and the Middle East.

They take part in these festivals and contests with the financial help of the government and the local authorities. These children always manage to draw the attention to their talent, including in many festivals in Bulgaria.

PROTECT YOUR HONOUR, NOT YOUR POSSESSIONS
From "Rituals and traditions of the peoples of Kazakhstan"
Embassy of the Republic of Kazakhstan

Page 47

The land of Kazakhstan has preserved many traditions. Since the birth nomads take care of the fragile human life and find their way thanks to the signs of the Great steppe. Every generation of Kazakhs, regardless of the epoch and the conditions, respects the precept of its ancestors synthesized in the proverb: "Even if you starve for six years, do not forget your forefathers".
You will barely find a Kazakh who is not aware of the meaning of terms and symbols such as suinshi, shildehana, sundet, toy, baygazy, betashar, etc.

UNIQUE ORIGINALITY AND COMFORT
Ministry of culture and information of the Republic of Kazakhstan

Page 50

National costumes represent the rich historical and cultural heritage, while studying them we can get acquainted with the traditions and rituals of a particular nation. The Kazakh national costumes are distinguished for their unique originality. Probably the reason is that Kazakhs have always lived very close to the nature and have lead a nomadic way of life.
