 In the 16th century, Algeria became part of the Ottoman Empire. In 1830, France invaded the country. To free their homeland from French colonial rule, the Algerians founded the National Liberation Front (FLN) in 1954. Independence was declared on 5th July 1962. Ahmed Ben Bella, a prominent FLN leader, became independent Algeria's first president. In 1988, the Algerian government embarked on a series of reforms, to respond to mass protests. In 1999, Abdelaziz Bouteflika was elected president of Algeria.

 After a decade of relative stagnation, the bilateral dialogue between Algeria and Bulgaria was renewed in late 1990s. The 2007 and 2011 sessions of the Intergovernmental Committee for Economic, Commercial, Scientific, and Technological Cooperation, the exchange of high level visits and cultural cooperation between the two countries gave a new start to bilateral relations. Several bilateral agreements between Algeria and Bulgaria have been signed and others are being finalized.

 Algeria is one of the biggest oil producers in the world. The oil industry is the main source of revenue for the country. Algeria has a very low external debt and a small deficit. The country's inflation rate is one of the lowest in the Arab World. Annual growth is about 4-5 percent. The country offers very attractive opportunities to foreign investors.

 Algeria is rich in resources other than oil and gas such as ores and phosphates. According to some experts, many of Algeria's mineral deposits are located in remote areas lacking adequate transport infrastructure and have thus remained unexploited.  Mohamed Racim is a famous Algerian artist. He was born on 24th June 1896 of a family of famous artists. In 1914 the popular artist Etienne - Nasreddine Dinet noticed the work of Racim. Only 5 years later, Racim staged his first exhibition. At the age of 37, he was awarded the Grand Prix des Beaux Arts de l'Algérie.
