 The bilateral relations between The Republic of Cyprus and The Republic of Bulgaria were established on 30th October 1960. Since then the two countries have come to terms with over 30 bilateral agreements. Also the trade relations between Cyprus and Bulgaria develop actively. Cyprus is one of the main investor countries in Bulgaria. The countries cooperate with each other also in the field of science, culture and education.

 The main source of income of Cyprus in the 60’s was the cultivating. Thanks to the country’s good geographic position, favorable climate and renewed infrastructure somewhere around the 80’s Cyprus became a popular tourist destination and an international business center. On 1st May 2004 the it became a member of the European Union and the government instituted economic reforms. After the Cypriot membership of the eurozone on 1st January 2008, the euro became the official currency.

 Cyprus is one of the most ancient countries in the world. Through the ages many civilizations have left their heritage here. In 333 B.C. Cyprus was conquered by Alexander the Great. Later the country became part of the Roman Empire and then of the Ottoman Empire. In 1960, after years of fighting for its freedom, Cyprus finally became independent. After the war the country was divided into Greek and Turkish Cypriot sections. Due to a conflict in 1964 here was established United Nations peacekeeping force.

 More than 4,000 Greek and Cypriot companies with significant capital are operating nowadays in the Balkans. This prompted the need to introduce modern Greek as a major degree in the largest universities on the Peninsula.Today, more than 4,000 students choose the Greek language as a subject in Bulgaria. It is taught in 5 Bulgarian universities in Veliko Tarnovo, Sofia, Blagoevgrad and Plovdiv. The interest in studying Greek in the Balkans has its centuries-old roots. In the Middle Ages Greek was the language, spoken by the educated aristocratic elite. Later, in the Renaissance, the first schools in Bulgaria were also Greek.

 Alexis Ziras is a famous Greek literature critic. He was born in Athens in 1945. For more than 35 years now he has been exploring the Cypriot literature and its resemblance to the Greek one. According to him the Greek and the Cypriot literary works have mutual root. Recently he won the prize of the Greek PEN club for his book "Aspects of the Cypriot literature 1900-2000".

 The Greek cultural foundation Leventis was established in 1979 by Anastasios Leventis. Its main goals are the preserving of the cultural heritage and the environment. The foundation is also the main sponsor of the University of Cyprus. It has branches all around the world, which finance different projects and work for the popularization of the Greek history and culture.  The St. Lazare monastery is thought to be the most sacred place in Larnaca and is one of the three most well preserved Byzantine churches in Cyprus. According to the locals Lazare is the city’s patron. Here you can hear the famous legend for Saint Lazare, who died and was resurrected by Jesus Christ. After his resurrection he lived for more than 30 years and contributed to the spread of the Christianity in Cyprus.

 NICOSIA
 Situated in the heart of Cyprus, the city of Nicosia has population of about 309 500 people. It was declared a capital around the 11th century. Nowadays there are different museums, old churches and fortresses here. On the other hand Nicosia is a very spirited city and a trade center. It is the world’s last divided city with a United Nations buffer zone between the Greek and the Turkish Cypriot sections.
 
 LIMASSOL
 Limassol is the second-largest city in Cyprus and has population of about 161 000 people. It was built between two ancient cities: Amathus and Kourion, whose remains are still vivid. Limassol’s sightseeing is the Greco-Roman theatre, the Sanctuary of Apollon, the Kolossi castle and the wine villages of Krasohoria.
 
 LARNACA
 Larnaca is the third-largest city of Cyprus with a population of 77 000 people. The city was founded by Greeks in the 14th century B.C. and was known as Kition. The patron of Larnaca is St. Lazare. One of the most visited places here is the archeological settlement of Khirokitia, which has been listed as a World Heritage Site by UNESCO since 1998. The biggest airport of Cyprus is also in Larnaca.
 
 PAPHOS
 Paphos is situated in Southwestern Cyprus. In Greco-Roman times Paphos was the capital of Cyprus. According to the Greek mythology Aphrodite - the goddess of love and beauty was born here. Also the spread of the Christianity in Cyprus began in Paphos in 45 A.C. The Old part of the city has been listed as a World Heritage Site by UNESCO. Famous sightseeing is the Tombs of the Kings, the Column of Apostle Paul and the Castles of Dionysus, Theseus , Orpheus and Aeolus.
 
 TROODOS
 If you like the combination of fresh air and beautiful nature, The Troodos Mountains are the perfect place for your vacation. The mountains are the highest in Cyprus. Troodos’ most famous peak is Mount Olympus. The most visited sightseeing here is the Kykkos monastery. The unique Byzantine churches and the St. John monastery were inscribed on the World Heritage List by UNESCO.

 Mihail Kashalos is a famous Cypriot artist. He was born 1885 in the Cypriot town Asha. As he was young he visited a museum and was amused by the ancient statuary, situated there. Then he decided to make his own, which were astonishing. During his life he took part of different exhibitions and was awarded many times. Main theme of his paintings was the life in Cyprus - the Cypriot customs and peoples’ joy and sadness. He died in Larnaka on 31st August 1974. After his death he was prized the Lifetime Achievement award of the Athens Academy.
